25. TIPPU TIP: IVORY, SLAVERY AND DISCOVERY IN THE SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA

Generously supported by
THE CRESCENT TRUST

The turbulent world of the ‘Scramble for Africa’ in the late 19th century will be the stage for Stuart Laing’s talk on the colourful life of Tippu Tip, a Zanzibari Arab ivory trader, who assisted Livingstone, Stanley and other explorers, and was engaged as a provincial Governor in the Congo by King Leopold. He will give a graphic account of an energetic, resourceful, ruthless but humorous operator.
