PROFILE: Richard Llewellyn
After leaving school in 1943 at the age of seventeen, Richard Llewellyn spent four months at Greenwich Naval College and Chatham Gunnery School learning gunnery and various other skills before being posted as Midshipman first on HMS Howe, a battleship that was part of the Atlantic Fleet moored in Scapa Flow, and then on HMS Ajax, the first ship to open fire on D-Day. Following the Invasion of Normandy, he served on the HMS Ajax in the Mediterranean and was subsequently sent to join HMS Easton as Navigating Officer. He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 2016.
