Sir Peter Westmacott was British Ambassador to the United States 2012-16. Ambassador to France 2007-12, and Ambassador to Turkey 2002-06. His 40-year career in the British Diplomatic Service also included four years in Iran (before the Revolution) and an interim deployment to the European Commission in Brussels. He is currently a Fellow at IOP and Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center at the Kennedy School at Harvard University.
Described as one of the most brilliant and consequential diplomats of his generation, Sir Peter Westmacott will give a fascinating insight into the world of diplomacy and Britain's global standing. His career straddled the last decade of the Cold War and the age of globalisation, included spells in pre-revolutionary Iran and the European Commission in Brussels, and culminated in prestigious ambassadorial postings in Ankara, Paris and Washington in the post-9/11 era. He will offer revealing portraits of global leaders such as Blair, Erdogan, Obama and Biden, as well as detailing some of the successes of recent British diplomacy.
