BLACK POWDER: THE GUNPOWDER STORY

What is gunpowder? And how is it made? In this event we will be making gunpowder on the spot and showing how it changed with the arrival of the ‘corning’ process. From its birth in China in the 9th Century to the 17th Century, this will include plenty of demonstrations of burning rates and also live firing. Boom!

17th CENTURY FIELD GUN: FROM BEGINNINGS TO THE BATTLEFIELD

Just what is involved in getting a Civil War artillery piece to the battlefield? In this event, we will demonstrate all the varying parts from the wheelwright, to the foundry and from preparing the gunpowder and shot to the challenge of travelling from the arsenal to the battlefield. With live firing.

Ever wondered how injuries would be treated on the ancient battlefield? This fascinating session will take modern surgeons and vets, give them surgical tools from the past, and challenge them to treat the “injured” carcasses from “Edged and Projectile Weapons” using evidence from specific periods. Witness and understand the horrors and limitations of historic medicine.
