6. AN ELEPHANT IN ROME: BERNINI, THE POPE AND THE MAKING OF THE ETERNAL CITY

In an effort to restore the prestige of his church, in 1655 Pope Alexander VII enlisted the artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini to make Rome the must-visit destination for Europe’s elite. Inspired by Bernini’s sculpture of the Elephant and the Obelisk, author and television presenter Loyd Grossman will explore how Alexander VII and Bernini became one of the greatest artistic double acts in history.
