In this fifth Thread of History talk, Clare Jackson will revisit one of the most extraordinary watershed moments in British history: the public execution of King Charles I in 1649. While regicide was followed by the creation of a republican Commonwealth and Cromwellian Protectorates, the inhabitants of the British Isles saw their ‘worlds turned upside down’ during eleven tumultuous years, before the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
